Apple quietly killed off two of its oldest surviving MP3 players today by removing them from its online store. The iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano aren't just off the site, they are no more according to an Apple spokesperson who confirmed their death to The Verge.
The iPod Nano is the older of the two having been announced back in 2005 as the successor to the iPod Mini (remember the iPod Mini?). Unlike older iPods which still used large and heavy hard drives, the Nano was one of the first iPods to use more modern flash memory, which allowed for the shrinkage in size. Between its launch in September 2005 and today, Apple put out 7 different generations of Nano, abandoning the iconic clickwheel on revision number six.
The Shuffle came a bit later in September 2010, a product aimed pretty squarely at the active set who would be willing to sacrifice things like a screen or easily choosing what song they wanted to listen to in order for a tiny form factor that was practically unnoticeable while strapped to the arm. The iPod Shuffle went through four generation, changing its shape every time.
It should be no surprise that Apple has finally canned these two older 'Pods which no longer really fit into Apple's suite of modern devices. Neither device supports apps, which have become a cornerstone of Apple's music business now that Apple Music has all but replace the aging, bloated disaster that is iTunes. Similarly, streaming (which neither of these devices can fully support given they've got no capacity for a data connection) has overtaken older download-ing based habits.
The throwback to music listening that doesn't rely on app subscriptions or cut into your data cap made these older Apple gadgets beloved and uniquely useful to the folks who kept them in active rotation. So if you've got one that still works, you better take good care of it. New ones will be hard to find.
